Last Saturday morning, 16th of November 2013; I had the opportunity to join the press conference hosted by Mr. Tom Alvarez of Monster Radio at the Bonifacio Global City held in Skinny Mike’s Sports Bar and Restaurant. I find this invite very interesting because, one; I have never been to Nuvali and second; it is my first time to have been invited to talk about a biking event so I didn’t know what to expect at all. We began by having Ms. Athena Mendoza describe what this event is all about and what are those that we need to watch out for. Let me begin on giving you guys a mental picture of first the highlights of the said event. As this is the first UCI (Union Cyclist Internationale) National Mountain Bike Championships, the categories to get excited for are:
- Cross Country Olympics – as per Wikipedia, Cross-country cycling is defined by the terrain on which it is performed. XC courses and trails consist of a mix of rough forest paths and singletrack(also referred to as doubletrack depending on width), smooth fireroads, and even paved paths connecting other trails. Riding or racing is also only deemed cross-country if the technical complexity of the trails is easy or moderate. This type of racing emphasizes endurance above technical prowess, and races vary from 30 minutes to 24 hours in length. Additionally, many mountain bike races are divided up into stages so as to span several days. Races can be either point-to-point or lap-based. Short-track cross-country consists of many very short laps so as to be spectator-friendly. This category is almost synonymous with marathons in the light of racing by foot.
- Downhill-Individual– This one is a time trial event held on a steep, rough terrain that often features jumps, rock gardens and other obstacles. Riders start at intervals, often seeded from slowest to fastest. Courses typically take two to five minutes to complete and winning margins are often less than a second. Riders are timed with equipment similar to that used in Downhill skiing.
- Four Cross Race – is a relatively new style of mountain bike racing where four bikers race downhill on a prepared, BMX like, track, simply trying to get down first. These bikes are generally either full suspension with 3 to 4 inches of travel, or hardtails, and typically have relatively strong frames. They run a chainguide on front and gears on the back. They have slack head angles, short chainstays and low bottom brackets for good cornering and acceleration.
On top of these Prime cycling events, the competition also involves fun-filled activities for everybody:
Now, I know many of you have a lot of questions in mind especially those who have never gone to Nuvali about how all these are to be made successful in a vast mass of land that is not developed for it. Apparently, the development of this area has long been in the works of the Ayala land corporation. When I first heard that they are the developers of this growing community, I said WOW!!!! This must be a great place then, a must-visit and something to be excited about especially for families who have long been searching for an out of town escape with just minutes to an hour away drive away. On my search in the web, it proved me that my impressions was actually right, this place should really top my where-to-go on Sundays list, because more often you just need good and clean air to breath for you to feel the pleasure of living. The Ayala Corporation is really well-known for their pursuits in incorporating nature in their architectural designs of establishments and I have seen a few which I must say are outstandingly beautiful. So, to learn about Nuvali is a much-anticipated wake-up call for metro residents to hit the road and flex some muscles and spend some leisure time with nature more, instead of the usual mall activities we are all used to. Here is a video clip on what Nuvali can offer for the nature lover and the adventurer.
The greatest advantage in joining this activity is for professional bikers since as per UCI representative Mr. Geoff, joining would help professional bikers to earn points and be qualified in joining big competitions such as world cups and the Olympics. As a lay person and upon attending this press-con, I’m in for the fun part of it as it looks like the event has tons. In addition, I would like to inform my readers that a percentage of the accumulated registration fees will be donated to help with the rehabilitation of the homes in coastal areas of Carles and Estancia, Iloilo. Funds for new fishing gear to the affected local fishermen shall also be provided.
